Temperament
Recognized for its intelligence, vigilance and devotion to its owner. The Belgian shepherd must be attentive and vigilant in the presence of strangers without, however, showing apprehension. He must not show fear or shyness and must not be hostile. With people familiar to him, he is very affectionate, kind and sociable. In addition to his ability to herd, he knows how to protect his master and his property.
Activity level
The Belgian Shepherd has a strong desire to work. This versatile breed excels at herding, obedience, and many other sports. Regular and constant mental and physical exercise is necessary and appreciated.
Size weight
A male should measure 24 to 26 in (61 to 66 cm) at the withers, and a female 22 to 24 in (56 to 61 cm) at the withers.
Dress
There are two long-haired varieties – the tervueren and the groenendael. The Malinois is the short-haired variety and the Laekenois, the wire-haired version.
Color
The color of the longhaired tervueren varies from rich fawn to reddish mahogany to gray tinged with black. The coat pigmentation should be double, the end of each light hair being black. The face should have a black mask and the ears are mostly black. The longhaired groenendael is completely black or black with small white spots on the chest, the tips of the hind toes and a light frost on the muzzle and chin. The color of the Shorthaired Malinois also varies from bright fawn to mahogany russet tinged with black with black mask and ears. The Wirehaired Laekenois may be light fawn to reddish brown, gray also being allowed, There may be black shading on the muzzle, ears and tail.
Grooming
Grooming requirements vary depending on coat type. Since all varieties have a soft undercoat and a harder outer coat, it is important to brush down to the root of the coat to avoid matting. In any case, a good regular brushing allows to have a beautiful healthy hair.
